Hotlinking can drain up your bandwidth ridiculously and that will make your site running slow as well. What is hotlinking anyway? Hotlinking is direct linking to a web site’s files. For example, (images, videos).
You could easily prevent this enabling Hotlink protection and it is very important. There are many ways to prevent hotlinking. If you are a WordPress user, there are plugins available for that. Personally, I like plugins less because they raise issues sometimes. All sites must be hosted somewhere and this method is for any websites. Here we proceed.
You must have got access to your cPanel I believe. Simply navigate to the “Security” section in cPanel, shown in the image below and please click the “Hotlink protection” and this will take you to a page where you will see “Enable”. Enable it by clicking it and things are done (But before enabling it, please select/check “Allow direct requests” and if you want more things to filter please add them right now and when everything is organized, please click “Enable”.
An important part to follow: You could easily filter more things here and all the options are on the same page. For example, in the “Block direct access for the following extensions (comma-separated):” section, by default only “jpg, jpeg, gif, png, bmp” and they are protected as soon as the “Hotlink protection” is activated. If you want your .html,.mp3,mp4 or videos to be protected as well, simply add them in that text box and add a comma to separate each. Please check/select “Allow direct requests”. Images below will help us to understand it clearly.
Finally, you have activated it. In future, if you want to add more things that you want to protect, then simply put them in, “Block direct access for the following extensions (comma-separated):” section, it is where you have added “bmp, jpg, jpeg, png“. But you must disable hotlink protection by clicking “Disable” first and then follow the mentioned process above (Please see those three images above) and then finally “Enable” it.
All the best and please try to avoid plugins for stable performance if you are a WordPress user.
